Matagorda Fishing Report

April 27, 2008

We were in the water all week this week focusing on pods of baitfish. Plum/Chartreuse Brown Lures and small topwaters like the chrome/black super spook jr. felt the teeth of plenty trout and redfish.

Thursday, Randy and Joe Wittenburg hopped in my Explorer and we hit West Bay. 15-20 mph southerly winds have become something I'm used to in the last weeks. An area tucked in the shore started our wade. The bait was there but there were no bites....we waited it out.....like clockwork the fish moved onto the grass. Trout were flying out of the water chasing bait and I even saw what looked like a bull shark 5-6 ft long jump out of the water and spin. It was a little further off of course. After not getting any bites for two hours, the anglers put together a nice box of fish for the house.

Saturday was on slow mode. Travis Orsak's group-a trip I donated to CCA-started our wade in another bayou. We waded alongside a deep gut all afternoon. Same gig as thursday-the bait was there, but the fish had not. We watched several boats in the proximity cut their losses and leave...but we waited. I was confident some fish were going to take advantage of the feast that awaited.
I told the guys as light was running out, to make one last wade-a quick one. Two of us jumped out-the other two were hesitant after the last wade's grind...however, it turned on. It was time for the feed. We watched as the bait flipping on the water made it seem like it was actually raining all around us. The trout moved in and we watched them shoot out of the water chasing bait. Almost machine like, the fish were smashing schools of bait. Pops, sprays of bait, and hooksets set the mood for the last remainder of light. Weeding through a few throwbacks, Travis and I put together a eight healthy trout before darkness fell.

I driftfished and wadefished during the past week. I can easily say wadefishing produced the best fish. Although, there are some solid fish to be had while drifting.

DRIFTFISHING: Saturday's charter consisted of an eight-year-old boy and his father Richard who have never been on a boat before. Their friend joined them as well.

We departed from the dock and the day's weather was perfect. Light winds, blue skies, and a bright sun provided plenty of promise.

We located birds working in the middle of the bay and we caught smaller sized fish. A stop over broken up shell and streaky water produced small redfish and trout. Five keeper specks were put on ice using live shrimp and corks.

WADEFISHING: Big trout bit the hooks of anglers this weekend during the Plugger Open trout tournament that took place.

My calendar is available here. If you have dates of interest feel free to book online here.
Also, check out the Texas Trio Classic fishing tournament on August 2nd in Matagorda. The tournament is going towards finding a cure for cancer. I cannot think of a better use for the funds raised from a fishing tournament!
