I apologize that I have not posted in a month. I completed two rigorous school courses during a month long summer session. Somehow I did run a half-day charter in Port O'Connor.
I am now available to guide until August 30th. If you want to fish Matagorda or Port Mansfield, give me a call. I'd be thrilled to put you on some fish. 979-240-9999 or kyle@kyletomek.com

Matagorda:
West Matagorda: I had great success in West Matagorda this week. Limits came quickly when we weren't getting distracted by approaching storms. My approach this week consisted of wades over shorelines with deep grass humps. With a good pair of polarized sunglasses, anglers and I made casts from waist deep water over a hard sand bottom to this grass and at many times instantly hooked up. I love West Matagorda this time of year. I expect this routine to continue as hurricane tides subside. There are extreme amounts of baitfish at every location I fished.
Surf: Waters have smoothed a bit this week. My charter and I drove to a south shoreline backlake to give it a peak. But we could easily see some whitecaps breaking on the shore. We probably could have string a few on topwaters, but we opted for a south shoreline area that has produced consistent catches. As I stated previously, I do expect the surf to really turn on very soon.
Port O'Connor:
Espritu Santo: I made a few trips back to POC this week. Limits came even quicker than West Matagorda. Shoreline wades were beneficial for numbers of nice trout ranging from 16-23 inches. I focused my anglers on drop offs rich with grass and sand....and lots of bait.
On Sunday, June 26th: This is a picture of the stringer after ONE wade. As stated above the routine in POC and West Matagorda has been exactly the same. Tequila gold soft plastics and a little topwater is all it takes.
On Monday, June 27th: Tequila Gold did it again for Wilson Griffith and his son. The day started off ugly but turned beautiful. We quit fishing early and I gave them a tour of the rest of the Matagorda Bay Complex, including a quick trip to East Matagorda Bay.
Jake and Clay Ebner hoist a stringer from POC this week. We quickly started for looking for redfish after this wade and released several on gold spoons and super spooks.
Port O'Connor, Texas:
I like not be tied down to any particular bay system, at this point in my life. On a whim, I can go where I believe the fish are biting best. Weeks ago, I was fishing my tail off in Port Mansfield. Only days later, I was waist deep in East and West Matagorda Bay. And last week, I ran trips out of Port O'Connor, Texas and navigated waters in West Matagorda and Espiritu Santo.
What I can gather from recently fishing these various locations while applying differing techniques are a few trends. Wading grass and sand guts in West Matagorda and Espiritu Santo has been effective on soft plastics in waist deep to chest deep water. I have refrained from wading too deep in these locations. I cast into these waist to chest drop offs without trekking through these fish zones. This has been key to producing large numbers of specks for myself, as well as others who are fishing similar areas. Making long drifts over deep shell panned out well for me this week as well. Similar reports trickle out of East Matagorda from drifters.
Pictured First: My stringer following a wade last week while wading a shoreline full of guts, grass, & sand - excellent summertime focus points.
Pictured Second: Jake Ebner and I fished in POC the day before I guided a charter in Port O'Connor. Using tequila gold sand eel jrs, I was able to put together a very nice stringer of fish. All of these fish were very solid and not the typical cookie cutter specks that I so often encounter in POC. Ebner is MAD at the fish with a S.T.A.R. winner trout on his mind.
Pictured Third: Jake Ebner & Me following a quality day for quality fish on soft plastics
Pictured Fourth: Angler with a POC catch of last week
(Not Pictured): My camera finally broke down from the constant abuse of saltwater which did not allow me to snap a pic of my clients and their catch after my drift fishing charter alongside Capt. Tommy Kubala..
Sunday the 20th-Friday the 25th, I vacationed at the Frio River in Concan. My family and friends numbering around 26 arrived reading for a week of relaxation and floating the river. A good time was had by all and I'm ready to get back on the water...the saltwater, that is.
Book now for remaining trips in June & Port Mansfield in August. Stay tuned for July Openings.

Lower Laguna Madre-Port Mansfield, Texas:
Plain and simple-Every wade produced fish. During the first morning, I steadily received slaps and splashes towards my topwater plug before I made the switch to soft plastics. The switch made all the difference. The very next cast I hooked a trout pushing seven pounds on the boga. The big girl easily cleared my 28 inch mark on my rod. She was released after a snapshot. The fish was a great start to my trips on the lower laguna. The very next cast I hooked a 24 to top it off.
The mornings that followed were exciting with good numbers of trout. Redfish were difficult to find. We waded sand and grass and focused on casting to potholes and drifted grass beds. Red and white was the color I stuck with. Drifting seemed to produce fish at a quicker rate. But the wadefishing was equally fun and produced 25-26" trout on the final morning of the trip.
Expect for Port Mansfield to continue to produce as winds stabilize and crowds diminish. I have the entire month of August available for charters in the Lower Laguna. Visit my calendar by clicking on the link below.
East Matagorda Bay:
Quality over quantity was the name of the game in East Matagorda. Winds blew over 20 most days this week, which narrowed our locations for wadefishing. We did the best with the locations we had and found some very solid fish. The highlight of my week in East Matagorda Bay was when my group boxed eleven trout with most over 20 inches while wading south shoreline shell and hard mud. We focused our wade on looking for bait and protection from the wind and it paid off for quality over quantity this week. East Matagorda will certainly produce more than just quality during my upcoming charters in East Matagorda Bay. Winds will calm and open up many more possiblities. That STAR winner trout awaits. Come get you some wadefishing action in East Matagorda Bay.
West Matagorda Bay:
West Bay was extremely hit or miss this week. Oddly the bay went from producing full limits of trout for many anglers on thursday to causing most to struggle on friday. Bait is thick in every location and there is plenty of beautiful water available to waders.

Lower Laguna Madre-Port Mansfield, Texas: May 2010
I just returned from a quick trip to Port Mansfield. Winds were howling from the minute we arrived until we departed. Long drifts in three to five feet of water worked to box trout from 16-25 inches. Red and white soft plastics received most strikes. The redfish bite was on for the rest of the anglers in our group that had fished the Laguna for the previous two days. However, the rubber lipped carp were difficult to track down during the days we fished. On this particular trip we caught fish, but did not experience the catches we normally do. I would say the boat traffic and 25-30 mph winds were certainly to blame.
Fortunately there are many more weeks of summer remaining. I look forward to many great catches coming soon. Stay tuned for pictures and more reports. .
Brown tide, low tide, and high winds made us work more than usual during my stay on the Lower Laguna. The highlight of the weekend was JRay Malone catching and releasing an amazing trophy on a fly rod, during his bachelor party. He stated he stalked the fish for fifty yards before making the first cast...and that is all it took to make her eat. Congratulations to Jarid on his upcoming wedding and his huge 29.25" , 8 lb, speckled trout!
Additional redfish and trout were caught on topwaters in protected waters fishing grass and sand pockets using topwaters. Wading the spoils proved slower than normal but produced scattered fish.
To make the bite turn back to normal, all we can ask for is trips consisting of lower winds, higher tides, and/or the nonexistence of brown tide.
